MyCase Client Portal: Features, Setup, and Alternatives

Last updated: March 21, 2026

TLDR

The MyCase client portal gives clients secure access to case documents, messages, invoices, and payment links. It is one of the more complete client portal implementations in the mid-market, but it is only included in MyCase Pro and above ($69+/user/mo) — not the Basic plan at $39/user/mo.

PROS & CONS

MyCase Client Portal

Pros

  • Clean, client-friendly interface that does not require legal software familiarity
  • Clients can view and pay invoices directly through the portal
  • Document sharing is straightforward — upload once, client can access immediately
  • Secure messaging keeps client communication out of personal email accounts

Cons

  • Not available on MyCase Basic ($39/user/mo) — requires Pro tier or higher
  • Client mobile app is a separate download (MyCase for Clients) — not always intuitive for less tech-savvy clients
  • Billing disputes have no direct resolution path in the portal — client must contact the attorney
  • Portal customization (firm branding, colors) is limited compared to standalone client portal tools

What the MyCase client portal does

The MyCase client portal gives clients a login where they can access documents, send messages to the firm, view invoices, pay outstanding balances, and sign documents without calling the office.

From the attorney’s side, documents shared through the portal link automatically to the correct matter file. Messages are stored in the matter record alongside other communications, so there is no separate inbox to check.

For a small firm, this cuts down on calls asking for document copies, speeds up retainer collection when clients can pay through the portal, and keeps client communications in one place rather than across personal email accounts.

Which MyCase plan includes the portal

The client portal is not available on MyCase Basic ($39/user/month). It requires MyCase Pro ($69/user/month) or MyCase Advanced ($89/user/month).

Firms that sign up for Basic to evaluate MyCase and then want to enable the portal have to upgrade. The jump from $39 to $69 per user is meaningful for a four or five attorney firm.

If client portal access is a requirement from day one, evaluate MyCase at the Pro tier. The advertised entry price does not include it.

Setup process

Setting up the portal takes less than an hour for most firms. The main steps:

  1. Enable the client portal in firm settings (one toggle, not a separate configuration panel).
  2. Customize the welcome message clients see when they first log in.
  3. Send portal invitations to clients from within each matter — MyCase generates the invitation email automatically.
  4. Share documents by uploading them to the matter and marking them as client-visible. Documents not marked for sharing remain internal.

There is no client onboarding fee. Clients set their own passwords and can log in immediately after accepting the invitation.

What clients see

The client view is intentionally simplified compared to the attorney view. Clients see:

  • Documents: Only files the attorney has explicitly shared. The full internal document file is not visible.
  • Messages: The secure message thread between the client and the firm. Standard email is not part of this thread.
  • Invoices and billing: Outstanding invoices with a payment link. Paid invoices are also visible for reference.
  • Case status: Basic matter information the attorney has chosen to display.

Clients do not see internal notes, staff communications, billing rates, or any information from other clients.

Comparison with Clio for Clients

Clio’s equivalent is called Clio for Clients. It is available on Clio Essentials ($79/user/month) and above.

Both portals cover the same ground: document sharing, secure messaging, invoice access, and eSignature. The distinction is in execution. MyCase’s client-facing interface is generally considered cleaner and easier for non-technical clients to navigate. Clio for Clients sits more tightly inside the Clio ecosystem — if your firm runs on Clio for everything, the portal feels like a natural part of the workflow.

MyCase Pro is $69/user/month; Clio Essentials is $79/user/month. CaelusLaw Essentials at $20/user/month includes client portal, secure messaging, and intake in one subscription.

The portal is not the right reason to pick one product over another. Evaluate it as part of the full workflow: billing, matter management, intake, and calendar all matter more over the long run than which portal looks cleaner.

What is the MyCase client portal?

The MyCase client portal is a secure online space where law firm clients can log in to view their case documents, send and receive messages with their attorney, review invoices, and submit payments. It is accessible via web browser and through a dedicated mobile app (MyCase for Clients). Clients do not need a MyCase subscription — the firm shares portal access as part of the engagement.

Is the MyCase client portal secure?

MyCase uses TLS encryption for data in transit and AES-256 encryption for data at rest. The portal requires client authentication before accessing any case information. Messages sent through the portal are stored on MyCase servers rather than passing through standard email, which reduces the risk of interception. Attorneys should still advise clients on secure password practices, as portal security depends partly on the client's own device and account security.

Which MyCase plan includes the client portal?

The MyCase client portal is included in MyCase Pro ($69/user/month) and MyCase Advanced ($89/user/month). It is not available on MyCase Basic ($39/user/month). Firms that sign up for Basic and later want to enable the portal must upgrade their plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can clients sign documents through the MyCase portal?
Yes. MyCase includes eSignature functionality for clients to sign documents through the portal. Attorneys upload the document, designate signature fields, and the client receives a notification to review and sign. Signed documents are stored in the matter file. eSignature is available on Pro and Advanced plans.
How do clients access the MyCase portal?
Attorneys send clients an invitation email from within MyCase. The client sets up a password and logs in through the MyCase website or the MyCase for Clients mobile app. Clients only see information from their own matters — they cannot access other clients' files.
Does MyCase client portal work on mobile?
MyCase offers a dedicated client-facing mobile app called MyCase for Clients, available on iOS and Android. The attorney-facing MyCase mobile app is separate. Clients who prefer browser access can also use the web portal on mobile, though the dedicated app provides a better experience.
What is the difference between MyCase portal and Clio for Clients?
Both are client-facing portals with document sharing, messaging, and invoice access. Clio for Clients (Clio's equivalent, previously called MyCase-style client portals in competitor comparisons) is available on Clio Essentials and above. MyCase's portal has a reputation for a cleaner client experience, while Clio's has deeper integration with Clio Manage's full feature set. Pricing is comparable: both require a mid-tier plan at roughly $69-79/user/month to unlock the portal.
