Legal Practice Management Pricing Comparison: All 11 Platforms (2026)
TLDR
Legal PM software ranges from $39 to $149+ per user per month, but the sticker price is misleading. Only 4 of 11 platforms include built-in accounting. Clio's fully loaded cost exceeds $200/user/month. Setup fees range from $0 to $50,000. Contract terms range from month-to-month to 36-month lock-ins. This comparison covers every major platform's real cost.

What Is Included vs. What Costs Extra
The biggest pricing trap in legal PM software is assuming the base price includes everything a law firm needs. It does not, on most platforms.
Trust Accounting
Trust accounting is required for every attorney who holds client funds. Despite this, only 4 of 11 platforms include it in the base price:
- Included: CosmoLex, CARET Legal, LEAP, AbacusLaw/PCLaw (legacy)
- Add-on: MyCase ($39/month per firm), Clio (separate Clio Accounting product)
- Not offered (requires third-party tool): PracticePanther, TimeSolv, Smokeball, Rocket Matter
For the 7 platforms without built-in accounting, you will need to add either the vendor’s accounting add-on or a third-party tool (QuickBooks + a trust accounting layer, CosmoLex standalone, etc.).
Full General Ledger Accounting
Even among platforms with “built-in accounting,” there is a difference between trust accounting (tracking client funds) and full general ledger accounting (managing the firm’s entire financial picture including operating accounts, payables, receivables, and financial statements).
- Full GL accounting included: CosmoLex, CARET Legal, LEAP
- Trust accounting only (basic): Some tiers of MyCase (add-on), Clio (separate product)
- Legacy full accounting: AbacusLaw, PCLaw
Document Management
Most platforms include basic document storage. Advanced features (OCR, version tracking, document automation, unlimited storage) vary:
- Robust document management: Smokeball (strong document automation), LEAP, Clio (Complete tier)
- Basic document storage: MyCase, PracticePanther, CosmoLex, TimeSolv, Rocket Matter
- Legacy document management: AbacusLaw, PCLaw
Client Intake / CRM
Client intake and relationship management is increasingly important, but not all platforms include it:
- Included: Clio (via Grow, but it is a separate product), MyCase (Pro and above), PracticePanther (Essential and above)
- Not included (requires third-party): TimeSolv, CosmoLex, CARET Legal, Rocket Matter (basic only)
